📋 Introduction

Reliable energy on the water: who is this material for

This article will be useful for owners of a small boat that requires not "just a battery", but a well-thought-out power supply system for confidently starting the engine at any time, lighting, echo sounder, navigation, possibly for pumps, charging gadgets, and at the same time does not leave you without energy at the most inopportune moment.

Based on Victron Energy equipment, you can assemble a reliable 12 V system for fishing, recreation, short trips on the water, and work tasks, as well as competently re-equip old boat electrics without chaotic compromises.

If you are choosing a solution for a small boat, a speedboat, or an aluminum motorboat, the specialists of Total-Energo LLC will help you choose the right scheme, equipment, protection, and cabling. We advise not only clients who need a "turnkey" installation, but also those who have decided to perform the installation on their own and want to do it right the first time.

What tasks should the system on a small boat solve

Even on a small vessel, the electrical system must be stable, safe, and understandable in operation, because typical problems usually begin not with a lack of equipment, but with the wrong architecture: one battery for everything, lack of protection against deep discharge, wiring of insufficient cross-section, poor connections, and an incomprehensible remaining battery charge, slow charging, neglect of the available energy of the alternator, etc.

That is why Victron, in its marine and river solutions, separately highlights DC distribution, battery monitoring, battery protection, separate charging, inverters, shore chargers, and monitoring systems. Often, all components can be connected to a single controller and data can be displayed on a chartplotter.

For a small boat, it is most often necessary to solve several tasks

1 Reliable engine start

2 Powering onboard DC loads

3 Protection against deep discharge

4 Correct charging from the engine and 230V

5 Control of the actual battery charge

6 Possibility of expanding the system

🔧 Architecture

Basic 12V scheme for a small boat

Why the right architecture is important

For the starting configuration, Victron shows a classic and correct base: battery, main battery switch, fuses, DC distribution and loads.

It is precisely this logic that should be taken as a basis for a small boat, because it disciplines the wiring, simplifies diagnostics, and reduces the risk of overheating, failures, and emergency connections "directly to the terminal".

In the basic version, we recommend the following equipment composition:

  • One high-quality battery for the current load, AGM / GEL or LiFePO4 depending on the operation scenario
  • Main battery switch
  • Main fuse
  • Separate DC distribution for loads
  • BatteryProtect to disconnect consumers before a critical discharge
  • SmartShunt to control the real state of the battery

Such a scheme is especially well suited for:

PVC boats with a motor
Aluminum boats

📊 Monitoring

How to monitor the battery state

LACK OF MONITORING – A TYPICAL MISTAKE

In practice, one of the most common mistakes is to evaluate the battery state "by eye", by voltage or by how brightly the lighting burns, or to rely on so-called "coulometers" – budget and inaccurate meters as part of entry-level batteries.

We recommend choosing between SmartShunt and BMV battery monitors as a mandatory control element, because a battery monitor allows you to see the current, remaining capacity, discharge history, and the actual state of the battery and not guess about it.

For a small boat, the SmartShunt is especially useful if you have:

Echo sounder Refrigerator Searchlight Pump USB chargersSeveral lightning lines

SmartShunt and BMV — the right choice

A battery monitor allows you to see the current remaining capacity, discharge history, and the actual state of the battery.

  • Display protection IP68
  • Battery temperature control
  • Audible signal about battery discharge
  • Accounting for the number of charge and discharge cycles
  • A simple and inexpensive option with maximum return
  • Proof of correct operation in a warranty case
  • Non-volatile memory — an operation log is kept automatically
🛡️ BATTERY PROTECTION

Battery protection against deep discharge

BatteryProtect – Battery protection and +30 to operating life

In marine and river systems, Victron Energy offers BatteryProtect as a solution to protect the battery from excessive discharge by DC loads.

For a small boat, this is one of the most useful components, because it is deep discharge that most often kills the battery resource and causes complaints in the style of "a new battery died quickly". LiFePO4 batteries also need protection just as much as lead-acid AGM / GEL battery variants. Do not forget that the BMS shutdown in LiFePO4 occurs at a critical value of high and low voltage for the cells. Any manufacturer recommends not bringing batteries to an emergency BMS shutdown!

BatteryProtect is needed if you want:

  • Save battery resource
  • Eliminate accidental "draining" of the battery in the parking lot
  • Protect the service battery from "invisible" consumers
  • Make the system more predictable
  • Disconnect secondary loads when the battery discharge threshold is reached

This unit works especially well in boats that regularly stand on the water, at a base, or on a trailer between trips. BatteryProtect protection can be controlled automatically by the battery charge % state from the dry contacts of the BMV-712 battery monitor.

⚡ Two batteries

How to correctly use starter and service batteries

It is a big mistake to use one battery, especially if there are already noticeable onboard loads on the boat. If you use AGM / GEL batteries, especially for such cases, there is a scheme with Cyrix-ct intelligent battery combiner, where the starter and service batteries work separately, but can correctly charge from the alternator and/or charger.

The advantage of separate use of batteries on a boat

The household load does not "eat" the starter battery, and the engine starts confidently at the right moment. For the boat owner, this means less stress, fewer emergency situations, and a more understandable operating logic. In a word, with the help of this Cyrix-ct intelligent battery combiner option, you will get comfort even when using AGM or GEL types of batteries as additional, service ones.

This solution is especially useful when there is on board:

🔌 DC/DC charging

When is it better to use DC-DC charging

Our assortment also includes more advanced chargers that can fully charge any type of battery from an alternator (direct current generator)! This is – DC/DC charging based on Orion-Tr Smart Charger devices.

For modernizing a boat, this is an especially important option, because an ordinary battery combiner or isolator will not be the optimal solution in all systems, especially if you are updating existing electrics, changing the type of batteries, or want more controlled charging of the service battery.

Full-fledged DC-DC charging is necessary if:

  • You separate the starter and service battery
  • You want a more correct charge profile for service AGM/GEL
  • You are upgrading to LiFePO₄ or another specialized type of battery
  • You want to limit and stabilize the charge current
  • You are making a deep modernization of an outdated system with an eye on 5-10 years of stable operation and flexibility in the future

Logic based on the Orion-Tr Smart Charger is well suited for such tasks, because it allows you to assemble a neater and more modern scheme than many old boat solutions.

🔋 CHOICE OF TECHNOLOGY

AGM / GEL or LiFePO4 for a small boat

AGM/GEL—when it suits

Is it worth buying LiFePO₄ immediately today?
Experience shows that if the boat is used occasionally and the load is moderate (not an electric motor or trolling motor), AGM or GEL still remains an understandable and working option.

If fast charging, less weight, deep discharge cycles, and higher available capacity are important, then you should consider LiFePO4, but only as part of a correctly assembled system, and not as "just a battery replacement". An improperly used LiFePO₄ will not last long, moreover, it can turn out to be a very unreliable tool if the scheme is assembled incorrectly.

LiFePO4 — important conditions

When switching to lithium, it is important to remember that there are special chargers for a lithium battery, both from the shore network and from the alternator (direct current generator). And what is even more important, the alternator voltage can differ from the battery voltage because the Orion-Tr Smart Charger series of DC/DC chargers can charge batteries with a voltage of 12, 24, and 48V from generators with a different nominal voltage

The second and important point is that lithium iron phosphate batteries can draw a large current from the generator of the boat or speedboat. If you allow LiFePO₄ to draw current directly from the generator or through a basic relay, the generator can quickly fail due to frequent overloads when the demand for current is too high: charging the starter battery, powering DC loads, possibly an AC inverter, and also the LiFePO₄ battery!

Such a situation is often relevant for clients who want to re-equip an old boat: changing only the battery without revising the scheme is often not enough and sometimes dangerous for the generator, charger, and the entire onboard logic.

⚠️ Important to remember

Remember that the presence of a BMS does not compensate for incorrect current or charge voltage! The architecture of lithium iron phosphate batteries requires correct charge management and battery protection. A BMS is an extreme measure, which, in essence, disconnects the internal cells of the battery at critical values of low or high charge, incorrect charge current, incorrect charge temperature, etc. The less often the BMS triggers at limit voltage values, the longer resource the battery will provide to its owner.

🔌 Shore charging

Charging a boat from 230V on shore

For small boats that are kept in a boathouse, at a pier, in a box, or at a service base, charging from 230 V is very convenient. The best solution for this task will be the use of the following series of chargers, which are specifically designed for river and marine transport:

For 6, 12, and 24V batteries. Reliable protection, Bluetooth control. In the box there are a large number of options, the most versatile solution for charging batteries on a boat, car, or motorcycle. There is a battery recovery mode from 0V!

Using Victron Energy chargers is convenient in scenarios:

  • Preparing the boat for departure
  • Battery maintenance in the off-season
  • Compensation of parking loads
  • Careful charging of the service battery
  • Recovery of AGM / GEL batteries
  • Correct charge profile for LiFePO4 batteries
  • Charging atypical batteries (availability of user settings for any type of battery!)

If the boat is stored connected to the shore network, the system must be designed competently, taking into account protection, automation, and correct connection.

☀️ SOLAR ENERGY

How to integrate solar panels into the boat's network

Sun + MPPT = quiet charging

Modern solar modules already have a power of 500+ W in compact sizes up to 2 m², which allows you to get a significant power influx without the noise of a generator.

Victron Energy offers panels from 30 to 330 W in compact sizes, convenient for integration on a boat. A wide selection of Smart Solar MPPT controllers will allow you to choose the right model to charge a battery of any technology (AGM / GEL/LiFePO₄) for any operating voltage: 12, 24, 36 or 48 Volts.

Our specialists will provide the service of integrating several solar panels into the boat's scheme, taking into account their location on the boat, so that the generation is maximum on a sunny and even a cloudy day.

⚡ 230V on board

Do you need a 230V inverter on a small boat

Obviously, if you cannot do without using 230V loads, then an inverter is necessary. We offer special highly efficient autonomous inverters (without a charger) and hybrid inverters (with a built-in charger). For small boats, there are specialized models from 150 W with zero current consumption from the battery at idle in ECO-Mode.

All Victron Energy inverter models are designed to operate in a wide temperature range, with vibration, shaking, moisture, etc.

For a small boat, an inverter is not always needed, but it is useful if you want to power a laptop, charging blocks, tools, service equipment or a small household 230V load.

Remember!

Do not choose an inverter "with a margin for all occasions" without calculating the real load. It is more correct to select the power for your scenarios so as not to overload the battery, cable line and the charging part of the system. MultiPlus inverters have independent battery charging from the shore network and 230V transit to the boat. The battery is charged at maximum power while 230V consumers can operate independently on the boat!

🔍 ADDITIONAL TOPICS

Important questions: wiring, corrosion and installation

What to do if the boat has old wiring

Re-equipping old boat electrics — is one of the most requested tasks, because over time, twists, oxidized terminals, mixed lines, "temporary" modifications, and unprotected circuits often accumulate on vessels.

In many cases, the problem lies not in a single faulty battery, but in the logic of the old system itself: improper distribution, tired connections, voltage losses, and a lack of normal protection.

If you are re-equipping an old boat, you need to start with:

  • Revision of wiring and terminals
  • Checking cable cross-sections
  • Separation of the starter and service parts
  • Installation of fuses and mass switch
  • Implementation of battery monitoring
  • Selection of a correct charging scheme

This is exactly where a consultation before buying provides the maximum benefit, because it allows you not to waste money on a random set of components. And we are interested in analyzing your individual situation and offering a technically competent solution.

Is protection against galvanic corrosion needed

If a small boat is connected to a shore network, the topic of galvanic isolation should not be ignored.

Use of Galvanic Isolator and Isolation Transformer as solutions for galvanic isolation and AC system protection.

This is especially important for boats that stand in a marina for a long time or connect to shore power, because the issues of corrosion of underwater metal, propeller, shaft, and anodes are closely related to the quality and correctness of the shore connection.

If you have such an operating scenario, we will suggest whether you need a Galvanic Isolator, an Isolation Transformer, or whether a correctly implemented basic connection diagram is enough.

Consultation before DIY installation

Many small boat owners prefer to do the installation themselves. This is an excellent approach, but only provided that the correct electrical diagram was chosen initially.
