Preparing Your Home Electrical System for Winter
A checklist from Total Energo: how to check your home's electrical system before the heating season starts, and avoid appliance failures and blackouts in freezing weather.
Why Winter Is a Stress Test for Your Electrical System
In winter, several load factors stack up at once — ones the grid simply doesn't face in summer.
Heaters, boilers, underfloor heating, and water heaters run simultaneously for months on end, on top of the risk of scheduled and emergency power outages. That's why wiring, breakers, and protective equipment should be checked ahead of time — in autumn, not once the frost has already hit.
The Total Energo team diagnoses home electrical systems and selects protective equipment for real winter loads.
What Loads the Grid in Winter
1 A sharp rise in consumption from heating devices
2 Overload on the local district grid
3 More outages caused by ice and wind
4 Risk of scheduled and emergency blackouts
The main winter loads on your home grid come from:
The Most Common Cause of Winter Problems
Power most often trips during freezing weather because the combined output of all appliances running at once exceeds the breaker rating in the panel. It's worth calculating the load ahead of the season — not finding out by trial and error at −15°C.
10 Steps Before the Heating Season Starts
Check the Condition of Your Breaker Panel
Look for signs of heat damage, melting, or discoloration on the breakers — a breaker that's hot to the touch, even under normal load, needs an electrician's attention.
Recalculate Your Total Load
List the appliances that will run at the same time in winter, and compare it against your breaker ratings and service capacity.
Inspect Wiring at Key Points
Especially where high-power appliances are connected: a discolored outlet, a burning smell, or a hot plug are all warning signs.
Test Your RCD/GFCI Protection
Residual current devices are critical during the season of higher humidity — test the function using the "T" test button.
Assess Your Grounding
Especially important for homes with boilers and water heaters — a metal appliance casing without proper grounding is dangerous.
Install a Voltage Stabilizer
The grid is at its least stable in winter — a stabilizer protects your boiler and pumps from voltage sags and spikes.
Prepare Your Backup Power
Check your generator's condition, fuel level, and automatic transfer switch (ATS) ahead of time — not once the frost sets in.
Set Up a UPS for Your Boiler
Even a gas boiler usually relies on electricity for its automation and circulation pump — without power, heating stops.
Inspect Outdoor Wiring and Service Entrances
Ice and wind add extra strain that weakened fittings on an overhead line may not withstand.
Make a Plan for Power Outages
Decide in advance how to maintain a minimum temperature in the home and how to quickly switch to backup power.
