APC Smart-UPS SMX — is an expanded line of single-phase uninterruptible power supplies that combines an interactive architecture with hot-swappable batteries, external battery modules (EBM) connectivity, and flexible Tower/Rack installation. With SmartSlot support, expanded displays, and integration with EcoStruxure, these models are widely used in IT infrastructure, server rooms, and small-to-medium industrial environments. SMX diagnostics allows you to identify problems in the inverter, battery, power circuits and communication channels.
What diagnostics include
Inspection / audit
- Assessment of the physical condition of the housing, front panel, ventilation holes, fasteners (especially for rack mounting).
- Checking the connection of the SMX48RMBP or SMX120RMBP battery modules: tightness of connections, status indication.
- Overview of operating conditions: temperature, humidity, presence of dust, grounding, input power networks.
Electrical tests
- Measurement of input voltage and frequency parameters: phase control, operation of the AVR regulator (automatic equalization).
- Control of the output voltage on all connectors: level, stability, absence of pulse surges.
- Evaluation of the efficiency of transitions between modes (AC → Battery → AC), load tests.
- Analysis of behavior under overload or protection conditions (overload, short-circuit).
Inverter / bypass / charge
- Functional check of the inverter circuit: stability of the output signal, temperature, switching speed.
- Evaluation of the charger operation, especially when external batteries are connected: current, voltage, temperature compensation.
- Error log control: overload, loss of communication with EBM, overheating, ventilation failure.
- Checking the status of SmartSlot or integration with Web/SNMP cards (AP9630, AP9640, AP9641).
Battery (battery system)
- Checking the internal battery module: condition, voltage, wear, errors such as "Replace Battery Soon/Now".
- Inspection of external EBMs: contact control, battery balancing, reading indicators (if provided).
- Runtime assessment (expected autonomy) and discharge test (automatic or engineering).
- External measurement of battery temperature, checking the level of degradation and electrolyte condition (if available).
Cooling
- Checking fan speed, noise background, vibration level, absence of mechanical damage.
- Analysis of component temperature under load — inverter, charging module, control board.
- Inspection of ventilation ducts for dust, blockages or obstructions to air flow.
Communications / monitoring
- Testing of local display: accuracy of voltage indication, SOC (State of Charge), load states.
- Checking SmartSlot functionality, connection via SNMP/Web-card to EcoStruxure or local monitoring system.
- Analysis of shutdown, EPO, dry contact alarm signals (where applicable).
- Reading and saving event logs, error messages, failures or load disconnection.
Technical report
- Preparation of a formalized report for all inspection points.
- Parameters of voltages, currents, temperatures, autonomy, as well as event log files.
- Assessment of the general technical condition and suitability for further operation.
- Recommendations for battery replacement, software update, calibration or equipment modernization.
When diagnostics are required
- At least once a year to prevent battery and electronics degradation.
- After the messages "Replace Battery", "Overload", "Communication Error", reduced battery life.
- After installing external battery packs or increasing the load.
- When changing the configuration, updating the firmware or connecting new monitoring cards.
