APC Smart-UPS SMT — is a line-interactive series of single-phase uninterruptible power supplies with a sine wave output, used to protect servers, routers, communication equipment and other critical infrastructure of small and medium scale. SMT models are distinguished by SmartSlot support, LCD display with advanced indication and a wide range of battery packs. Diagnostics of these UPSs provides detection of potential failures and prediction of the power system resource.
What diagnostics include
Inspection / audit
- Visual assessment of the condition of the housing, front panel, display, indicators, condition of fasteners and ventilation holes.
- Checking for correct installation (for example, for SMT models in Rack format), the presence of dust or overheating.
- Analysis of external connections: power supply, load, SmartSlot cards, battery packs (for SMT with EBM).
Electrical tests
- Measurement of input voltage and frequency, checking the correct operation of AVR (automatic voltage regulation).
- Control of output voltage and sinusoidal signal in mains and battery operation modes.
- Assessment frequency, distortion level, compliance with the VFD or VI standard.
- Load tests on real or simulated loads — fixing power stability.
Inverter / bypass / charge
- Checking the transition between modes: mains ↔ battery ↔ charge.
- Analysis of the charger operation: voltage, current, mode (boost, float), interaction with battery packs.
- Evaluation of operation in critical situations: overload, short circuit, emergency power outage.
- Reading the event history via LCD display or SmartSlot (if Web/SNMP card is available).
Battery system (battery system)
- Inspection of the internal battery compartment, checking sealed VRLA cells or RBC (Replace Battery Cartridge) modules.
- Measurement of battery voltage, balance between cells, case temperature, charge/discharge cycles.
- Estimation of backup power time with current load parameters (Runtime Remaining).
- If necessary — checking external EBM or XLBP modules.
Cooling
- Monitoring the status of fans, if provided for in a specific SMT model.
- Analysis of the temperature of internal components, checking cooling under load.
- Cleaning ventilation holes, checking for dust, obstructions to air flow.
Communications / monitoring
- Checking the operation of the LCD display: navigation, correctness of voltage, load, autonomy time indication.
- Analysis of communication via SmartSlot, SNMP cards (for example, AP9630/40/41), USB/RS-232 interfaces.
- Reading logs via PowerChute utilities or accessing the Web interface (if a network card is installed).
- Testing EPO messages, remote monitoring and shutdown of OS procedures.
Technical report
- Generation of a report with voltage measurements, battery status, event logs, warnings and errors.
- Assessment of the general technical condition of the system and the remaining battery life.
- Recommendations for battery replacement, monitoring modernization, flashing or service intervention.
When diagnostics are needed
- Annually — to prevent battery degradation and check the inverter electronics.
- After messages about Replace Battery, Internal Error, Overload appear or unstable operation under load.
- Before connecting new responsible consumers or moving equipment.
- After installing a new battery or external expansion unit.
