APC Smart-UPS RT — is a series of online (double-conversion) uninterruptible power supplies with the possibility of mounting in a Tower or Rack format. They are designed to provide uninterrupted power to critical IT equipment, servers, data storage systems, medical devices, telecommunications and industrial systems. With extended support for external battery packs, redundancy, SmartSlot interface and hot swappable batteries, these UPSs require regular diagnostics to ensure reliable and safe operation.
What diagnostics include
Inspection / audit
- Check the integrity of the housing, display, front panel and fasteners (especially for rack installations).
- Inspection of ventilation holes, filters, assessment of dust accumulation and environmental conditions.
- Check the connections of input/output power, EBM, SmartSlot cards (network, Dry Contact, etc.).
Electrical tests
- Analysis of input voltage and frequency on all phases (for three-phase models), check of AVR (automatic voltage regulator).
- Control of output voltage stability in inverter mode under different loads.
- Switching test: checking the speed of response to network loss, the absence of dips or pulses.
- Load tests (within power) to check the inverter operation under real consumption.
Inverter / bypass / charge
- Testing the inverter path: checking the voltage, frequency, sine wave quality parameters.
- Evaluation of the operation of the internal or external bypass, analysis of switching and failure logs.
- Checking the operation of the charger: charging current, stability, protection against overheating or overload.
- Control of the response to emergency situations (overload, short circuit, ventilation failure).
Battery (battery system)
- Checking the internal battery pack (if any) and connected external modules (SUA48RMXLBP, SURT192XLBP, etc.).
- Measurement of voltage, temperature, insulation status, balance between battery packs.
- Launch Battery Self-Test: check the battery's ability to hold the load during the autonomy time.
- Evaluation of charge/discharge cycles, forecast of the remaining resource, detection of errors such as Replace Battery.
Cooling
- Inspection of fans: speed, noise, temperature response when the load changes.
- Check the temperature of the inverter and charging components in nominal and peak mode.
- Cleaning of air ducts, monitoring the operation of temperature sensors and protection algorithms.
Communications / monitoring
- Analysis of the operation of the LCD display or LED indicators: correctness of indicators, logic of error display.
- Checking SNMP/Web cards (AP9619, AP9630/40): access to logs, network settings, event logs.
- Dry Contact functionality of inputs/outputs, checking emergency power off (EPO), shutdown signals.
- Integration test with PowerChute, EcoStruxure IT, SCADA monitoring systems, etc.
Technical report
- Report with measurements (input/output, charge, batteries, temperature), event logs, description of detected problems.
- Assessment of the UPS's readiness for operation in normal mode, forecast of the need to replace batteries.
- Recommendations for updating software, upgrading monitoring systems or connecting additional modules.
When needed diagnostics
- At least once a year — prevention of battery degradation, detection of inverter or bypass failures.
- After the Replace Battery, Overload, Internal Error, Charger Fault messages are triggered.
- Before commissioning after long-term storage or after installing external battery modules.
- When connecting critical loads or moving the system to a new facility.
