APC Back-UPS RS — a series of reliable mid-range line-interactive uninterruptible power supplies designed to protect computer equipment, home servers, routers and peripherals. They are equipped with AVR (voltage stabilization), USB/RS-232 ports for monitoring, status indicators, alarms and, in some models, the ability to replace the battery without turning off the load (hot-swap). Regular diagnostics are critically important to ensure stable operation during power outages or network surges.
What diagnostics include
Inspection / audit
- Inspection of the external condition of the housing: presence of damage, dirt, deformations, traces of overheating.
- Checking the operability of sockets with battery backup and those protected only from impulse surges.
- Assessment of UPS placement conditions: temperature, ventilation, dust, access to indicators and cables.
Electrical tests
- Measurement of input voltage and verification of AVR activation (Boost/Trim modes).
- Control of output voltage on load — compliance with the rating, stability, noise level.
- Switching test mains → battery → mains: switching time, correctness of the inverter and stabilizer actions.
- Checking the load disconnection function in case of overload or short circuit.
Inverter / bypass / charge
- Checking the signal quality from the inverter — voltage waveform (modified sine wave), stability under load.
- Assessment of the operation of the voltage stabilizer (AVR): maintaining the output voltage within acceptable limits in an unstable network.
- Analysis of the charging circuit: charge voltage, current, time to full battery charge after discharge.
- Reading system messages or indications: Overload, Replace Battery, Fault, etc.
Battery (battery system)
- Control of battery voltage without load and in discharge mode: assessment of the condition and level of degradation.
- Real-time test of autonomous operation under standard load (Runtime Test).
- Checking the results of Self-Test (automatic or forced) via software or indication.
- Visual assessment of the battery condition (upon access): absence of swelling, electrolyte leakage, traces corrosion.
Cooling
- Inspection of ventilation holes — presence of dust, blocking of air flow.
- Measurement of the surface temperature of the case during operation in various modes.
- Detection of signs of overheating: smell of overheated plastic, temperature alarm signaling (if available).
Communications / monitoring
- Checking USB or RS-232 communication with a PC, access to information via PowerChute Personal Edition or compatible software.
- Reading event logs: switching, overload, battery life, notification of battery replacement.
- Testing the functionality of automatic computer shutdown when the battery is critically low.
Technical report
- Documentation of input/output parameters, test results, battery and inverter status.
- Estimation of the current battery life, forecast of time to replacement.
- Recommendations for improving operating conditions, upgrading or replacing the battery.
When diagnostics are needed
- Periodically, once every 12 months, to maintain reliability in the event of a power outage.
- After Replace Battery messages or a significant reduction in battery life.
- In the event of unstable power supply, alarm signals, flashing indicators.
- After a long downtime without connection to the network or battery replacement.
