APC Back-UPS Pro — is a series of line-interactive UPSs designed to protect home offices, personal computers, network equipment, NAS servers and consumer electronics. The models of the series (BR, BX, BE, BGM) provide voltage stabilization (AVR), automatic switchover to batteries in the event of a power outage and basic monitoring via USB port. Diagnostics of these UPSs is necessary for timely detection of battery degradation, overloads or failures of internal components.
What diagnostics include
Inspection / audit
- Visual inspection of the condition of the housing, sockets, power button, indicators and ventilation holes.
- Assessment of the quality of installation (desktop, wall, floor placement), ventilation, absence of overheating or dust.
- Checking the load connections to the outputs with and without redundancy (Surge Only).
Electrical tests
- Measurement of input voltage, checking the correct operation of the AVR stabilizer (Boost/Trim).
- Analysis of the output voltage under load: stability, correct switching to batteries.
- Transition testing network-battery-network with switching time and signal integrity control.
- Checking the operation of protection against overload, short circuit, pulse jumps.
Inverter / bypass / charge
- Inverter testing: output voltage waveform (modified sine wave), stability with connected load.
- Analysis of battery charging mode: charge current, time to full charge, behavior after deep discharge.
- Reading self-test logs (Self-Test), which are available via USB or LED indication.
- Assessing the reaction to power outage and restoration scenarios.
Battery (battery system)
- Checking the battery voltage at rest and under load, fixing the voltage drop during discharge.
- Starting Self-Test with determination of current capacity and Runtime assessment under real load.
- Assessment of battery condition (Replace Battery), battery age, degradation level.
- Recording the temperature of the battery case during operation and charging.
Cooling
- Inspection of the condition of ventilation holes, control of the case temperature during operation.
- Check for the absence of the smell of overheated plastic, traces of thermal deformation.
- Analysis of behavior under long-term load – temperature increase, indication response.
Communications / monitoring
- Checking USB connection to computer: data transfer to PowerChute Personal Edition or embedded OS systems.
- Evaluating the correctness of displaying battery status, events and operating modes (Online, AVR, On Battery).
- Reading available logs (switching events, protection operation, Runtime, warnings).
- Checking shutdown functionality in case of critical battery discharge.
Technical report
- Summary report: input/output voltage, load, battery status, notification to the user about detected problems.
- Estimation of remaining battery life, replacement time forecast (if applicable).
- Recommendations for software updates, battery replacement, improving operating conditions (ventilation, load).
When diagnostics are needed
- At least once every 12 months — as a preventive measure to maintain functionality at a critical moment.
- After the Replace Battery or Runtime Below Threshold message.
- With a significant reduction in battery life or cases of self-shutdown during power outages.
- Before connecting new sensitive electronics or reconfiguring the load circuit.
