APC Back-UPS BX — is a series of basic line-interactive UPSs (Line-Interactive) for protecting household, office and network equipment. Devices of this line provide voltage stabilization (AVR), backup power during outages and protection against impulse overvoltages. BX models are used in workplaces, home offices, workstations and in switch cabinets. Given the simplified control and lack of intelligent monitoring in most models, regular diagnostics are key to preventing failure under load.
What diagnostics include
Inspection / audit
- Visual inspection of the case: no mechanical damage, swelling, traces of overheating or deformation.
- Check the condition of sockets (reserved and only with surge protection), buttons, LED indication.
- Analysis of operating conditions: dust level, humidity, temperature, ventilation.
Electrical tests
- Checking input voltage parameters, correct stabilization (Boost/Trim modes, if available).
- Controlling output voltage with a connected load — compliance with the nominal value, no drawdowns.
- Switching test: AC → Battery → AC with output delay and stability measurement.
- Checking load cutoff when exceeding the power threshold or the presence of a short circuit.
Inverter / bypass / charge
- Inverter operation test: output signal quality (modified sine wave), behavior under load.
- Analysis of AVR functionality (if available): whether it performs stabilization in an unstable network.
- Battery charge control: charge current, time to full charge, behavior after deep discharge.
- Reading basic indicators (sound signals, LED) for internal failures.
Battery (battery system)
- Checking battery voltage in idle mode and under load — voltage drop assessment.
- Testing the autonomous operation time at a given load — comparison with the nominal value.
- Battery status analysis: presence of Replace Battery messages or charging anomalies.
- Assessment of battery age, external condition (swelling, electrolyte leakage — when opened).
Cooling
- Control of case temperature during operation in different modes.
- Inspection of ventilation holes for dust or blockage of air flow.
- In the case of models with active cooling — check fan operation (if available).
Communications / monitoring
- For models with USB connection — check data access in PowerChute Personal Edition (if compatible).
- Assessment of alarm functions (sounds, flashing indicators) — compliance with error or status codes.
- Verifying user actions upon completion of charging — correctness of automatic load shutdown.
Technical report
- Generating a report on the status of all functional components: input/output, battery, indicators, events.
- Conclusions on the remaining battery life, the need for replacement or maintenance.
- Recommendations on operating conditions, load, ventilation and safe use.
When diagnostics are required
- Once a year — standard maintenance for household and small office UPSs.
- When the battery backup time decreases or the frequency of battery switching increases.
- After battery replacement — checking adaptation and charge efficiency.
- Before connecting new or power-sensitive devices (routers, NAS, POS).
